Sanders steps up to hold off furious comeback, Anderson fights valiantly

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The margins of victory were razor-thin in the quarterfinal matches at Oak Hill Country Club at the 70th U.S. Senior Amateur on Wednesday morning.  In match one, former Walker Cupper and former professional Mike Sposa, of Spartanburg, SC, defeated 2019 champion Bob Royak, of Alpharetta, GA, by a 1-up margin.  In match three, California’s Bob Niger held 1-up edge headed to 18 against Joe Sawaia, of Henderson, NV.  Niger would win 18 to post a 2-up victory.

Michael Anderson watches his tee shot at the third hole during the round of 32 of the 2025 U.S. Senior Amateur at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025.  Anderson fell to Mike McCoy, 1-down, in the Quarterfinals. (Ted Pio Roda/USGA)

In match two, Michael Anderson, of Novi, MI, faced perhaps his toughest opponent yet in former Walker Cup player and captain, as well as 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion, Mike McCoy, of Des Moines, IA.  Both players traded birdies on the first two holes, and then par victories on the following two holes.  Anderson took a 1-up advantage with a birdie on No. 7, but McCoy answered back in a big way with birdies on Nos. 8, 9, and 10 to go 2-up.  The match remained that way until Anderson cut the lead to one with a win on No. 14.  They headed to No. 18 (par 3, 162yds) with McCoy 1-up.  Anderson dug deep to make birdie and try to force extra holes, only to see McCoy match him with another one of his own to seal the win, 1-up.

In the final match of the morning, Greg Sanders, of Anthem, AZ, faced Spain’s Jacobo Cestino.  With both players finding their footing on the front nine, it was Sanders with a 1-up lead at the turn.  Sanders would birdie No. 11 and par No. 12 to build a 3-up cushion, but Cestino was not going away without a fight.  Staring at a 3-down deficit with four holes to play, Cestino caught fire, making three birdies in a row to head to No. 18 with the match tied.  Sanders kept his composure and stepped up with a huge birdie on 18 to take the win 1-up.
